The Challenge
St. Luke’s Health System wasn’t optimizing an existing warehouse, it was starting from zero.
With full reliance on third-party logistics, the organization lacked control over distribution speed, costs, and visibility. At the same time, any new operation needed to meet the high standards of healthcare: accuracy, consistency, and reliability are not optional. St. Luke's was experiencing:
-
Lack of operational control and high reliance on 3PLs St. Luke’s depended on outsourced distribution and sought to bring operations in-house to reduce costs, improve responsiveness, and gain greater visibility.
-
A need for a modern, safe, and ergonomic facility The new warehouse needed to reflect a high-tech, state-of-the-art environment that prioritized employee safety, reduced physical strain, and supported labor retention.
-
No prior warehouse or automation experience With no legacy systems or existing infrastructure, St. Luke’s required a trusted partner to provide guidance, consultation, and ongoing support throughout the entire journey.
The Approach
St. Luke’s partnered with Hai Robotics and Equipment Depot to design and deploy a fully automated, goods-to-person solution built around their goals.
Inside a 14,000 sq. ft. footprint, the system maximizes vertical space to deliver over 18,000 storage locations.
Powered by 28 Autonomous Case-handling Mobile Robots (ACRs), the solution brings inventory directly to operators, reducing travel, simplifying workflows, and improving efficiency from day one.
The result is an operation designed not just for performance, but for people:
-
Minimal operator movement
-
Ergonomic workstations
-
Clean, organized environment
-
Intuitive, easy-to-learn workflows
The Impact
With automation in place, St. Luke’s has transformed its supply chain into a high-performance, in-house operation.
-
Faster fulfillment: Up to 653 outbound totes per hour
-
Improved accuracy: Reliable, consistent processing of critical medical supplies
-
Greater control: Full visibility and ownership of distribution operations
-
Enhanced work environment: Safer, more ergonomic conditions that support employees
-
Regulatory-ready operations: Standardized, machine-washable totes within the system support cleanliness requirements for healthcare supply handling
Most importantly, the impact goes beyond the warehouse.
By ensuring dependable access to medical supplies, St. Luke’s is better equipped to support caregivers and the patients who rely on them.
A Foundation for Better Care
This isn’t just a warehouse. It’s a purpose-built consilidated services center designed to remove risk, improve consistency, and strengthen St. Luke's healthcare supply chain.
